As the popularity of vaping continues to rise, so do concerns about its potential impact on oral health. While the full extent of the hazards remains unclear, recent research suggests that e-cigarette vapors could pose risks to your mouth. Here’s what you need to understand about this emerging issue.

The Composition of Vapor

Unlike traditional tobacco cigarettes, electronic cigarettes are not subject to the same regulatory standards, leaving their contents inaccurately labeled and unregulated. Typically, e-juice contains nicotine, glycerin, chemical flavorings, and propylene glycol. While some of these ingredients are deemed safe for consumption in food, the effects of inhaling them are not thoroughly researched. Furthermore, the heating of these chemicals during vaping can produce dangerous carcinogens like formaldehyde. Additionally, e-cigarettes may contain tiny metal particles that users inhale while vaping.

Impact on Oral Health

A recent study conducted by UCLA shed light on the potential harm of e-cigarette vapors to oral health. The study exposed oral cells to e-cigarette smoke in a simulated environment, resulting in the death of 85% of the cells within 24 hours. This alarming finding underscores the vulnerability of oral cells to the harmful effects of vaping. As these cells serve as the mouth’s defense mechanism by releasing antioxidants, their demise or reduced effectiveness can leave the mouth susceptible to oral diseases.

Another study conducted by the University of Rochester Medical Center revealed that e-cigarettes are equally detrimental to gum health as traditional tobacco cigarettes. Nicotine, a common component in both types of cigarettes, is known to contribute to gum disease, further emphasizing the oral health risks associated with vaping.

Protective Measures

Given the lack of regulation in the e-juice industry and the potential carcinogenic contents of e-cigarettes, it’s advisable to steer clear of vaping altogether. Maintaining regular visits to our office, particularly if you’re a smoker, whether of traditional or electronic cigarettes, is crucial. During your visit, our experienced dental team will conduct a comprehensive oral examination to detect any signs of oral disease and provide proactive care.
